The Different Types of Pony Saddle
For general pony riding the English Saddle is the saddle most often used. It has a spring tree as a foundation and is well padded for the comfort of both pony and rider. This type of saddle allows the pony to move without restraint so it can jump, gallop or perform dressage.

The most important designs of English Saddle are:

The All Purpose English Saddle. This saddle is useful as a general pupose saddle for dressage, jumping, hacking and showing.

The Jumping Saddle is the best for show jumping, and also for fox-hunting and cross country classes. The main variation between this and the all-purpose saddle is in the forward cut flap design to make it possible to use shorter stirrups that position the legs correctly for jumping. The flap also has added knee rolls to support the knees.

The Dressage Saddle is designed for working on the flat, so is designed with a much straighter cut flap than either the jumping or all purpose saddle, with the seat designed to be deeper and further forward, giving the rider a straight posture and leg position. For dressage the rider requires finer control so this saddle is designed with a reduced amount of padding to ensure closer contact with the horse. Longer girth straps are used with a dressage saddle as they are attached much closer to the pony's elbow. Read More about The Different Types of Pony Saddle

How to Look After Your Pony Saddle
A properly looked after pony saddle should be usable for many years. The most important requirement is to keep the saddle clean and oiled. use a soft cloth to gently clean the saddle every time you use it, if it's excessively soiled clean it carefully with a bristle brush, an old toothbrush can be used to clean tricky parts such as seams or tooling. On a regular basis clean your saddle thoroughly with soapy water , glycerine soap (sold by saddlers) is probably the best soap to use, and let it dry well by hanging the saddle outside on a warm day if possible. When dry use a soft cloth or brush and a light oil to lubricate the saddle (baby oil or olive oil work well) then apply a leather conditioner to seal the pores. It's important to be sparing with the amount of oil you apply, you don't want a sticky saddle. Read More about How to Look After Your Pony Saddle

The Parts of a Pony Saddle
The Saddle Tree is the foundation of the saddle and can be either of two kinds - rigid or spring. A spring tree is generally used in English saddles, and a rigid tree in Western saddles. For spring trees the shape is created from a base constructed from thin plywood, layered over with fibreglass for strength. Steel strips placed beneath the saddle from front to back give the spring. For a rigid tree a wooden base covered in leather is used, or alternatively a fibreglass base with wooden shavings Steel plates are attached underneath the tree for further reinforcement.

Some saddles, called treeless are made without a rigid base, having a fibreglass pommel and cantle instead.

The Pommel is found at the front of the saddle and is the part that fits over the pony's withers.

The Cantle is the part that rises at the back of the seat.

The Seat is where the rider sits and is the depressed area in the middle of the saddle.

The Stirrup Leathers are the adjustable leather (or sometimes webbing) straps that are attached to horizontal bars under the skirt and are used to hold the stirrups. These bars are made in two pieces ,a bar and a movable catch to secure the stirrup leather and to release it should the rider fall from the pony.

The Stirrup Irons (also called stirrups) are attached to the stirrup leathers and provide support for a rider's feet. Read More about The Parts of a Pony Saddle
